How And Where Do You Buy A Medicare Supplement Insurance Policy?

Blog

Where can you buy a medicare supplement? A Medigap Plan covers copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and other health-related expenses original Medicare (Parts A and B) leaves behind. If you're ready to explore Medigap plans, take a look at what you need to know about purchasing a supplement and where to find a policy that fits your needs.

Can Anyone Buy A Medigap Plan?

You must meet the requirements to purchase a supplemental insurance policy. Medigap is limited to people who already have Medicare Parts A and B coverage. If you don't already have original Medicare (both A and B), you will need to apply for those policies before you start your Medigap policy search.

Can You Buy A Medigap Plan Anytime?

Most people must buy this type of plan during their open enrollment period. While it is possible for some people to purchase a supplement after their open enrollment period, the available plans may cost more. The ability to buy a policy after the open enrollment period depends on the insurance provider's rules and requirements.

How Can You Find A Supplement Plan?

You have original Medicare, are in the open enrollment period, and want to learn more about your supplement options. Unlike Medicare Parts A and B, which are federally funded insurance plans, the government does not provide or administer Medigap policies. Instead, private insurance companies sell these plans to eligible customers. There are a variety of policies (lettered A through N) available at different price points.

You can find information on policies and the companies that sell Medigap at Medicare.gov. This government website does not sell you the policy. You will need to enter your zip code and answer a few questions. The website will provide you with the Medigap policies in your area, price range estimates, and links to the insurance providers' websites and phone numbers.

After you find a plan on the federal government's website, you will need to contact the insurance provider to purchase the coverage. If you don't feel comfortable using the federal government's Medicare website or prefer another information-gathering option, contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (also known as SHIP) or your State Insurance Department.

Some people prefer to skip the general search step and contact insurance companies themselves. You can research companies on your own, choose a trusted provider, or call different insurers to compare plans, benefits, and costs.
