4 Things Medicare Might Not Cover So You Can Get Supplemental Insurance If Needed

If you have Medicare, you might have initially thought that you had plenty of insurance to have all of your medical needs taken care of. But soon enough, many people realize that although these plans do cover a lot, they don't cover everything and you may need to get additional or supplemental plans to help with coverage. Here are some things that your Medicare plan won't cover so that you can get additional coverage if needed.

1. Alternative Medicine

If you want to go to a chiropractor, herbalist, or acupuncturist, you may not be covered for that through your Medicare plan. Usually Medicare will only cover certain services, and from certain providers. However, if you choose to purchase an additional plan, you can get one that will pay a certain amount for chiropractic and alternative medical visits in a calendar year.

2. Dental and Vision

Surprisingly Medicare doesn't always take care of your dental and vision needs. If you need a new pair of glasses you may have to pay out of pocket for the visit and buy the glasses yourself.  This is also the case for routine dental services. Luckily, you can get supplemental plans of dental and vision that can help to get you these services if you'd rather have insurance than pay out of pocket.

3. Hearing

Hearing is another place where insurance may not be sufficient. Your Medicare may pay for small things relating to your hearing, but in many cases you will pay the majority of the expense out of pocket. If you know you will need hearing aids, or lots of treatment for your ears and hearing, you might consider buying a supplemental insurance plan that helps to pay for hearing aids and audiology visits often.

4. Overseas Treatment

Medicare is a national plan, so luckily you will generally have some sort of coverage around the country. You may not have great coverage when you are out of network, but if you end up in the emergency room, your insurance will help to cover it. However, if you are traveling out of the country, you will have no coverage from Medicare. If you purchase a private supplemental insurance you might have some sort of help when you go out of the country. If you travel often this may be worth looking into.

If you find that Medicare doesn't completely meet your needs, know that there are supplemental plans that can give you the coverage you need. Places like Alabama Medicare Plans can help you find the coverage that you need.
